Decluttering method
Declutter by category, not by room
A realistic way to use category-based tidying without emptying your whole house at once.
One of the most useful ideas from Marie Kondo’s tidying work is to declutter by category, not only by room. The reason is practical: families often store the same kind of item in many different places.
If you declutter only one room, you may never see how many extra papers, toys, mugs, baby clothes, or cleaning products are spread across the house.
Declutter before you organize.
Organizing before decluttering often creates organized clutter: prettier containers holding the same decisions, duplicates, and just-in-case items. The order matters. Edit first. Then give the remaining items a home.
The problem for busy moms
The original category-based approach can feel too big for a family home. Pulling out every item in a category may not be realistic when kids, meals, naps, school schedules, and laundry are happening around you.
Simple Home Rhythm adaptation: use categories, but shrink the container. One category, one zone, one realistic time block.
Use micro-categories
Instead of “all papers,” choose one paper category.
- school papers
- mail waiting for action
- receipts
- kids drawings
- medical or appointment papers
Instead of “all toys,” choose one toy category: blocks, stuffed animals, art supplies, dress-up, puzzles, or outdoor toys.
Why this works
Categories help you see patterns. Maybe the problem is not that your house is messy. Maybe the problem is that the same category is scattered in five places and has no clear home.
The category reset process
- Choose one small category.
- Gather only what you can finish today.
- Keep what supports current family life.
- Let go of duplicates and expired “just in case” items.
- Create one clear home for what remains.
Done well, category-based decluttering gives your brain a map. You stop wondering where things are because the category has a home.
